🔥🇦🇺 Behind the Ring: Our Ned Kelly Classic Helmet Ring Enters Production

What does a Ned Kelly ring look like before it becomes brass or sterling silver?

Bright green, as it turns out.

Our Ned Kelly Classic Helmet Ring has officially entered production, and we thought we'd share a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most interesting stages of creating a custom ring: the wax model.

Rather than only showing you the polished finished product, we want to show more of what actually goes into creating the rings available through Skull Ring Shop.

From a Ned Kelly Ring Concept to a Real Piece of Jewellery

This design began as part of our series of Australian-inspired Ned Kelly ring concepts.

After showing several different designs and getting feedback, the Classic Helmet design was one of the concepts we decided to take beyond the digital drawing board and put into actual production.

The design centres on one of Australia's most recognisable historical images: Ned Kelly's distinctive armour and helmet.

But turning an image on a screen into a ring you can actually put on your finger is where things get interesting.

⚒️ The Green Wax Stage

The photographs here show the wax version of the Ned Kelly Classic Helmet Ring before the final metal casting.

At this stage, you can already see the shape and detail that will eventually appear in the finished ring.

The helmet stands proudly in relief from the recessed background, while the raised outer rim helps define the signet face and provides an area that can later accommodate different background finishes.

It's an unusual-looking stage of jewellery production — and that's exactly why we wanted to show it.

Most people only ever see the finished brass or silver ring. Seeing the wax model gives you a completely different perspective on how a custom ring goes from an idea to something that can eventually be worn.

🎨 Oxidised or Coloured Enamel Background

One feature we're particularly looking forward to with this design is the choice of background treatment.

For a traditional, rugged appearance, the recessed area surrounding the Ned Kelly helmet can be given a dark oxidised finish, creating strong contrast against the raised metal.

Alternatively, we're designing the ring so that the recessed background can accommodate coloured enamel.

That means someone wanting something a little different could potentially choose a coloured enamel background while retaining the raised Ned Kelly helmet as the centrepiece of the design.

It's one ring design, but with plenty of opportunity to give the finished piece some individual character.

Brass or Sterling Silver Ned Kelly Ring

We're planning to offer the Ned Kelly Classic Helmet Ring in both brass and sterling silver.

Brass gives the design a warmer, old-world character that works particularly well with the Australian bushranger theme, while sterling silver provides a cooler, classic signet-ring appearance.

Once we have the finished castings back, we'll be showing both versions so you can see the difference for yourself.

And yes — we'll be taking plenty of photos.

🇦🇺 An Australian Ring Going From Idea to Reality

One of the things we enjoy most about custom jewellery is seeing the transformation happen.

Concept → wax model → casting → finishing → enamel or oxidation → finished ring.

The green wax model you see here might not look like traditional jewellery yet, but it's an important step between an idea on a screen and a solid piece of wearable metal.

And judging by how closely this wax version has followed our original concept, we're very excited to see the finished result.

This is what we are aiming for, and it looks like we ae on target to getting this just right as a fitting tribute to the legend himself.
